Copeland Oaks and Crandall Rehabilitation Center is a 250-acre retirement community located in Sebring. With over 700 residents and 500 employees, Copeland Oaks is a city within a city. After 17 years of serving as the Chief of Police for Sebring, I retired and was hired by Copeland Oaks as their Security Director. I have many jobs but one is to be part of the team that keeps our residents safe from crime. Seniors who are looking for a retirement community want to know, "How safe is Copeland Oaks?" We are in a low crime area, but that does not mean that we are exempt from theft. For the last 3 months of 2007, we were having numerous thefts from our lounges, pool table area and maintenance shop. The vandals broke into our locked boxes at the reception area, stealing many items. The residents were becoming concerned so our executive director advised that I should get a quote on video surveillance that I wanted. I had worked with Kim Steinmetz at Staley Technologies, through the Sebring Fire Department, so I contacted Kim. Kim and Brad Kandel, a technician, came over to Copeland Oaks to evaluate our situation. I discussed with them what I desired, and both were helpful in making suggestions of what equipment would work best for us. I was surprised at how reasonably priced the quote was for the inside video surveillance that I wanted. The purchase was approved and within two months of the installation, three subjects were arrested. They subjects stole a $10,000 bladder scanner from our reception area and we caught them on video. I reviewed the video with the Sebring Police and was able to make copies of the surveillance for them. The Sebring Police stated that this was some of the clearest video they have had to work with. Thank you Staley Technologies for working with us to provide security solutions. The residents saw the article in the Alliance Review, and appreciated very much that we were able to make their home safer. We are now starting another phase of surveillance at Copeland Oaks.
