FAQ's

Which System Should I Use?

While the most basic video surveillance system - a single camera connected to a monitor and recorder - could help, it is unlikely to be enough for most businesses. Most situations require multiple cameras. In some cases, you may even want a moveable camera to cover a large area. Before comparing systems you should consider your surveillance carefully.

What Do I Want to Monitor?

What you are trying to keep track of affects which components you will need. Are you trying to see general comings and goings, crowds, merchandise, or faces? Do you want wide sweeping views or pictures of specific items? This all affects the equipment you choose.

What Kind of Picture Quality am I Seeking?

Quality can refer to both how detailed the image is and how fast the frame rate is. Lower resolution and slower frame rates mean grainier, jerkier images, but will allow you to record for longer periods of time. The higher the resolution and higher the frame rate, the more expensive the equipment.

How Long Will I Need to Keep The Video?

With the advent of digital video recorders (DVR's), video storage and transmission has become easier. Digitally recorded video can be stored indefinitely on digital media (CD, DVD, and Hard Drive) and can be easily transmitted via a network or the internet. DVR's also offer instant playback of any recording, and can play and record at the same time. The DVR you choose does affect picture quality (frame rate). The longer the storage and the higher the frame rate, the more expensive the DVR.
